Already in 1934 was founded a Music Society in an important southern Estonian culture centre Võru. The initiative came from conductor and composer Eduard Tamm with the aim to develop the movement of symphonic and brass band music collectives. In 2004, the local music teachers, ensemble directors, and others interested in culture re-founded the society under the name of Võru Symphonic Music Society with the intention of creating a tradition of organising music festivals. Today the Society also advocates the Võru Brass Music Days. Võru Music Days are designed to be a four phase classical music concert series over a period from 2005 to 2007. Every programme will have one Haydn’s oratory out of ‘Four Seasons’ as the central composition. With the purpose of presenting the oratory, the Võru Oratory Choir and Symphony Orchestra was created, conducted by the Estonian National Opera conductor from Võru, Erki Pehk. The first program ‘Spring’ was offered in spring 2005, the second program ‘Winter’ will be in February 2006, the third series ‘Autumn’ in October 2006. All the concerts will be heard in Võru as well as Tartu. With the fourth concert the entire Haydn’s oratory will officially open a new festival Võru Music Days (Võru Summer Symphony) in August 2007. Organisers of Võru’s new festival wish to provide the spectators with symphony and chamber orchestra concerts along with recitals. The Artistic Director is Aavo Ots. | ||
