http://www.viljandimaa.ee/vanamusa The beauty of a South Estonia’s oldest town and music tested over centuries. The tradition of the oldest early music festival in Estonia was started in 1982. Concerts take place in churches, different concert halls and other interesting places in the town. At the Festival a number of well-known musicians have performed, e.g. Paolo Pandolfo, John Holloway, Loecki Stardust Quartet, Lars Ulrik Mortensen, Paul Hillier, Andrew Lawrence-King, Jane Gingell, Trio Mediaeval, Musica Petropolitana, Aina Kalnciema, David Kettelwell, Paul Leenhouts, Tõnu Kaljuste, Conrad Steinmann, Andres Mustonen, Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, Viljandi Linnakapell, ‘Latvija’ mixed choir, Hortus Musicus, Moscow Patriarchate Choir. Work with young people plays an important role in the Festival. Every time about a hundred young musicians from all over Estonia have gathered to perform the mystery drama „The Play of Daniel”, a performance of English music of the masks “The Mask of Flowers”, the opera „L’Orfeo” by Monteverdi, the opera „Bastien ja Bastienne” by Mozart, and „Zeus and Europa”, based on Greek mythology. The Festival begins on the second Sunday in July. The Artistic Director of the Festival is the flautist and producer Neeme Punder. | ||
