The Festival was founded in 1997 on the small island of Muhu, situated next to Saaremaa. The primary idea and reason for such an undertaking was to protect and keep the fragile but profound cultural heritage as well as to develop and introduce it, create connections with the world culture. The music is highlighted with audiovisual programs, concert programs shift between classical, jazz, and world music. Still, the ties between historical roots and modern art aspirations grow constantly.

More than 400 recognised musicians from Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Sweden, the USA, Denmark, Australia, Germany, Russia, France, Brazil, Mongolia, and Hawaii have brought the world onto the small island. Events take place in the historic sites of Muhu such as St Catherine's Church, Nautse Mihkli yard (accommodates 800 spectators) and threshing room, Pädaste Manor, and Koguva village.

The Festival’s founder and soul is a well known saxophonist Villu Veski. An overview of the Festival is available on a CD/DVD made in 2004. It is called ‘Eight Years of Music Festival on Muhu’ and includes photo galleries and recordings of church and outdoors concerts.
